I was thinking today while walking Kolby that the old saying "if mom ain't happy, ain't nobody happy" was true for our family! Yes, I am only a mother to a cat, dog, and sometimes an almost 24 year old police officer but they can certainly make a mess and drive me crazy! I stumbled upon something a few months ago I wanted to share. Coming home to a dirty, disorganized house after a long day at work is very stressful for me. (Or when I walk through the door to find Kolby running around the house with a coffee filter full of coffee ground scattering them everywhere). This can increase my crankiness meter with my little family. Due to my OCD I can't relax when the house is disorganized which takes away from family time. To solve this, I went looking online for some ideas. I found a lot of people have cleaning schedules, routines etc. I ended up finding a daily cleaning routine I thought I could stick to and that it would help. A few months later I've found it is working great! I'm able to enjoy evenings at home AND have a clean house. Additionally, I don't have to spend all weekend cleaning. Here is what works for me, obviously based on your needs it may need to be different.
Sunday: Get groceries, clean out fridge, set meal schedule for week and go through mail basket.
Monday: Set trash out, change cat litter and vacuum.
Tuesday: Clean bathrooms.
Wednesday: Sweep and clean non-carpeted floors.
Thursday: Clean surfaces (dust, windex etc).
Friday: Organize something. (Closet, drawer, etc)
Saturday: Laundry (really this is done all week, I just try to get it put away on weekends or catch up)
I've found this very helpful and it doesn't take very long to finish each task in the evening (especially if I can get Keith to help) . It's also nice to know if the bathrooms are dirty (or something else) it probably isn't long before I'm set to clean them. Now obviously some nights I don't get my chore done. If that happens I just do it the next night or wait until the weekend (or skip that week). I also make sure to "tidy" things up every evening before bed. All this together keeps things running pretty smooth!
