Happy Birthday Maggie Mae!

It is hard to believe our ornery little kitty is three years old today! Her birthday started off with a bang, wouldn't expect anything else in this house. Last night around 11:30 the city started flushing the fire hydrants which turns out is a very noisy process. A few loud noises woke kolby and the realization that we had no water after I went to the restroom led to a call to Keith. Turns out the noises outside and water were related. Time for bed. After about half an hour the pipes started making very loud noises; therefore, the barking started again! Finally calmed him down and went to bed. Around 6:00 this morning I heard a loud crash in the living room followed by a terrible kitty howl. Flew out of bed to investigate and found Maggie sitting on the windowsill, tail all puffed out howling. My thought is she was trying to reach a squirrel outside and ran into the window. And back to bed again. I was able to sleep in though until 8:00 when a certain pooch joined me in bed and decided it was time to start the day.

Back to Maggie's birthday. I am so used to Maggie's little quirks now I forgot how crazy life was when we first adopted her. I remember the first night bringing her home, I was making fettuccine Alfredo and she sat and cried and cried at my feet. I was so confused, I thought she was scared and lonely and I couldn't figure out how to quiet her down. Additionally we weren't supposed to have pets  in our apartment at the time so I was afraid someone would hear here. After a few days of trying to console her and some interesting dinners which included her climbing up our pant legs to get to the table we realized she wanted our food and not her cat food. Man, dinners were so hard those first few weeks. If we put her in a room she would howl so loud and if we left her out she would constantly be on the table. Luckily Keith thought to feed her wet food during dinner time which did the trick. Thankfully we have weaned her from the expensive wet food, haven't quite weaned her from leaving us alone at dinner time though. Additionally we discovered shortly after bringing her home that she had ringworm, and had spread it to us. This mean nightly baths for what seemed like forever but was probably just a few weeks. Keith was working second shift leaving most baths to just me. I remember shutting Maggie and I in the bathtub so she couldn't escape and then sitting in their singing to her for the 10 minutes the soap was supposed to soak in. I never understood the makers of this medicine...first you have to give your cat a bath every night...then once the soap is applied it has to soak for 10 minutes...I wanted to say you do realize this is for a cat right?!

In honor of her birthday a few of her quirks that make her special to us:
-she loves her dad. He is allowed to carry and hold her however he wants and she will sit there content. I try and she immediately jumps from my arms. There is a clear favorite in this house, unless I have food then she knows there is a better chance she can steal something from me. Additionally at night I am the one she snuggles with. Keith is a very heavy sleeper and many times she has tried to sleep next to him only to be rolled over on and squished. Many nights I've woken up to frantic pawing trying to get out from under him. I think she has finally learned to sleep on my side.
-she loves people food. We've already discussed this. She really is worse than the dog at mealtimes. The other day she stole a piece of pizza off my plate and ran away with it. She especially loves meat and dairy. Fruit and veggies are not her thing but get stuff out to make a Sandwhich and you have to lock her outside.
-she loves to be outside. She would stay outside all day every day if we let her, minus time for dinner.  Unfortunately she has discovered how to slip under or through the fence in a few spots and frequently escapes. Usually if I listen the squirrels give her away with their chatter and I can find her easily. The other day I found her on the roof looking in the living room window. A few days ago she found a nest of bunnies in the backyard. Her and kolby worked together to give them out and the both chased them around the yard. I was not amused.
-she likes to play in her water dish. We go through a lot of water here between her and kolby. She usually drinks by making a cup with her paw but occasionally I find her just playing in it.
-she has learned how to get kolby in trouble. Don't get me wrong he doesn't need any help but she has found if she messes with him or runs by him getting him to chase her he gets into trouble. She used to block
